Problem(s) with
Microsoft Word

Word has a long history of developing weird problems. The following steps will fix many of them by simply restoring Word's default settings.
  1. First make sure no Word files are open. Word has to be totally closed for this to work properly.
  2. WinXP users should click on Start>Search>All Files & Folders and type "normal.dot" into the All or Part of Name box.
  3. Also, click on More Advanced Options and be sure that "Search System Folders" and "Search Subfolders" are checked.
  4. Vista and Win7 users use similar steps with their Search options.
  5. Click on Search.
  6. The file "normal.dot" may appear in the Search Results more than once. Delete all of them. Now the next time Word is launched everything should be as it was when the program was originally installed.
Here's what happened: All of Word's default settings are stored in "normal.dot." If the file is deleted, Word will create a new copy of it the next time it's launched.
