Being Found on Google

A reader told me that her late husband had lead a noteworthy life and asked how she could get his name to show up on a Google search.

Well, for starter's someone's name must have been mentioned somewhere on the Internet in order to be found. The more frequently the name has been mentioned, the better its likelihood of being found near the top of a search. Having the name appear on multiple web sites helps push it near the top.

Probably the easiest way to create an Internet presence is to sign up on one or more of the social networking sites such MySpace, Friendster, Tagged, or Facebook, and post a biography. There are dozens of these types of sites and they are all free. What makes them free, of course, is all the advertising that is embedded in the pages.

If you would like your special person's bio to be free of ads, you can create your own Web site and perhaps use a domain name that incorporates his or her name. For instance, I have DonEdrington.com registered, but have not yet used it. I prefer "pcdon.com" (Personal Computer Don) because it's easy to type in without being misspelled. Having such a personal site is not free, of course, but a simple bio can be posted and maintained for relatively little cost.

You can also have a free site with Yahoo, Anglefire, AOL, MSN, and certain other providers that put just a minimum of advertising on the pages. In fact, many ISPs allow their subscribers to have personal sites with little or no advertising. Such providers offer a collection of simple templates that make creating a personal site relatively simple, complete with photos, music, and/or videos.

Having a Web Site is Essential for Anyone in Business

If you have a business of any kind, having a web site is essential in today's digital world. It's also possible to have a home-based business that earns money from the comfort of your own PC work-station. I've been doing it for years.

Beware of Get-Rich-Quick Schemes

I'd advise staying away from the plethora of "work-at-home-with-your-computer" schemes floating around. Yes, some people have struck gold, but "get-rich-quick" promotions usually make only the promoters rich.

If you have a commercial site you will quickly become acquainted with the concept of SEO (search engine optimization). You'll be competing with millions of other sites and your goal is to show up among the top dozen or so results of a Google search.

One way to get your site noticed is to exchange links with other sites. I constantly receive offers from sites whose main purpose appears to be "exchanging links," but I'm very cautious about accepting any of them.

The best thing you can do for your site is to put pages on it that are of genuine interest to visitors and which will make them want to return. Continuously adding pages that have interesting content is what it's all about. At least, that's what works for me.
